2008 PRRH picnic in Hugh Moore Park

The Phillipsburg Railroad Historians held their annual picnic today at Hugh Moore Park in Easton. The picnic is held in honor of Ed Meyers who passed a few years ago and was one of the early movers and shakers in PRRH.

Pete Terp was the grillmeister. Many brought their favorite side dish to share with the rest.

As in previous years we reserved a small pavilion within eyesight of the NS Lehigh line.

Meg Carpenito planned something special for us this year, a ride on a canal boat. After everyone finished eating and had some time to chat we all went over to the boat landing and boarded the Josiah White II canal boat. I opted to hoof it with the mules to get some pictures and video.

In the picture above the boat had just departed and was heading east in the Lehigh Canal. I had to be careful, the ladies told me one of the mules spooks easily, I didn't want to cause a problem. It was quite interesting to hear the ladies talking to the mules, almost negotiating with them to gain their cooperation.

The boat travels about a quarter mile then spins around and heads west about a mile. Here they are passing the landing heading west.

Above the boat has returned after short history lesson, a journey back in time.
The mules have been cut from the boat and returned to their stable, then the crew works to secure the boat to the landing.

This was a very relaxing and enjoyable day. The people at the Canal Museum were all very friendly and knowledgeable, certainly this is a great asset to this area.
Kudos to Meg who does most of the planning and leg work for our outings.
HiDef video of the day will be included in next years PRRH Banquet entertainment.
Take care,
Pete
